Turning Letters Into Patterns
for this I had to use single letter but duplicate it and reflect it to create a symbol

Visual Recipe assignment
Beginning of my research I searched for the chicken paella recipe as that is what I decided I was going to do for visual recipe. This particular recipe included the use of chorizo sausage as it was a chicken and chorizo sausage paella but I only wanted to do a chicken paella so I discarded it.
After looking for the recipe I did a mind map on the history of paella and where it first originated from.
I did a mood board after to show what ingredients went into the chicken paella dish
In this I spoke about why I chose cartoons for my chosen style and also a little bit about cartoons and how the the "cartoon" first came to play.
Intial sketches for visual recipe
These were the first quick sketches of the ingredients that were going into my recipe and my final piece.
I decide I was going to re draw my garlic and chicken stock cube as I wasn't happy with it
This was how I was going to do my layout for my visual recipe

Finished Visual Recipe
I decided I was going to do a Jazz poster so I collected a mixture of posters that were either image heavy or texted heavy. As soon as I collected the poster I selected six of them that I thought looked impressive and that caught my eye. For these six posters I wrote about the techniques the designer used to create this poster and why it worked really well for the purpose it was meant for which was represented the jazz theme in a visual way. After that I annotated another six general festival posters and explained what techniques the designer used for the poster that made it effective.
Initial sketches and design
Moodboards
I wanted to incorporate the element of de stijil into my poster like the straight lines as I thought it will be a great way to separate the names of the performers and use the lines to build a visual appealing layout that has the de stijil element in it.
Jazz instruments you would see in a typical Jazz band
Initial sketches and design
These were my first initial thumbnail sketches of the ideas I had in my head for my jazz poster I went with the bottom left one as I decided I wanted to still incorporate the de stijil element in my poster.
After I picked my design I sketched out the way it will be laid out and where I am going to place the information of the poster like the performers name. I also included how I am going to structure my title and finally sketched out the way my made up sponsor logo is going to be.
First final poster
Second poster colour choices
I messed with the colours and then chosen the one that I thought worked well. I also got opinions from class mates and asked which colour scheme looked best and most of them agreed on the pink one so that is the one I went with.
Second final poster
Design Report
For this
unit I had a choice to create two festival posters on either music or food. I
decided I was going to do a jazz music festival poster, so before I started to
come up with ideas in how was going to do this I first did a bit of research
into jazz festival posters and gather up a selection of jazz poster that I
thought were particular interesting to me. After that I chose six of them that
I thought were the best and wrote about them. For each of these posters I
talked about what I liked about them and what made them so effective compare to
rest, I also talked about the type of techniques the designers used to create
this poster such as the way he or she laid out the type or the type of colours
they used. As soon as I got done with that I decided I wanted to do one more
research page on general festival posters and talk about what made them so
effective and what different elements the designers used to create that poster.
This consisted of the designer infusing graphical work such as vectors and
typography with other styles such as photography and sculpture work.
As soon as I
completed my research on festival posters I had an idea on what styles I was
going approach my two festival posters for the first posters I decided I was
going to do it in a minimalistic De Stijl style and the other one I was going
to do it in a typographical illustrative way by using shapes such as rectangles
to present the text and also skewing the text giving them a 3D effect. I was also going to use a bright bold eye
catching colour for the background and also added a texture to give the
background a grunge effect. Before I got started with this I did a moodboard on
the De Stijl style and also another moodboard on jazz musical instruments as I
wanted incorporate a jazz instrument into one my design. As soon I was done
with that I was ready to get started with my initial thumbnail sketches, I sketched
out all the ideas I had in my head I wanted to do and then narrowed it down one
design I wasn’t really happy with the other thumbnail sketches I did but had
another idea for what I wanted to do for my second poster. For that one design
I did some development sketches in how I was going to execute this De Stijl style
and present it in my design. In these development sketches I showed how I was
going to position the text and also the layout of my poster. I also showed how the
title for my poster is going to look like while using the saxophone as letter
“J” for the word Jazz and also showing how my sponsor logo is going to look
like.
After I
completed my development sketches I was ready to get starting on my first
poster. The style I was going for was the minimalistic De Stijl style, so the
idea I had was to use lines to separate the poster and then insert text into
the spaces as De Stijl style consisted of lines and also the use of few
colours. The colours I was going to use for my poster weren’t the standard combinations
of De Stijl colours of blacks, reds, blues, yellows and whites but instead the use
of jazz themed colours such as purples, yellows, whites, blues and blacks. The
reason for this was that I wanted to do keep the jazz element in my theme
instead of using random colours. The typography for the texted and title mainly
consisted of bold san serif and decorative fonts, the san serif text being used
for the performers names and the decorative text being used for the title and
date of the festival. I did this because I wanted the performer’s names to be
bold and legible from a long distance and the title and date to be visually
appealing by using a fancy decorative font. I believe my final first poster
came out well as I kept true to the jazz theme by using jazz colours and I also
incorporating a jazz item into my design. Ways I could have improved my poster
was to play with the type layout and also try out different fonts.
Finally
completing my first poster I was ready to get started with my second poster for
this poster as I explained in the beginning of the report I wanted to do it in
an illustrative way by using just shapes, typography. I also wanted my
background to be bright and eye catching but also have a grunge texture to it.
So I started by picking a bright eye catching colour which was like a light
pink, I made the pink really bright but I was going to use to the grunge
texture tone it down a little. The way I used the texture was that I got a high
resolution texture of the internet and then place it on my poster, after that I
clicked on transparency and changed the transparency to hard light. When I done
that I finally changed the opacity to 32 percent, which created my grunge textured
background without losing the bright pink colour for my background. The font I
decided to use for my poster was going to be a decorative font as I wanted it
to be an illustrative jazz poster, I also wanted to skew the text to make it
uneven like they were on top of each other like a tower. Before I got started
with that I had to pick the fonts that would work well with my layout but also
were illustrative. The fonts on “Dafont” didn’t satisfy me so I searched the
web for other fonts from other sources on the web, finally through searching I
found the fonts that I liked and would work best with my layout and idea. After
that it was just putting it all together, I was happy in how it came out as it
came out better than I planned it in my head the colours and grunge texture
worked well with poster and also layout was what gave the poster justice.
Overall I
was happy with both of my outcomes as it is exactly how I wanted them to be in
the future to improve them I could have experimented a little bit and used
different styles like photography as both of my posters were vector based
designs.
